Appearance and expectations

What to know before whitening your teeth.

Whitening can lighten natural teeth, but the right approach depends on the reason for discoloration, your dental work, and your comfort. Start with an examination and a realistic discussion of the change you want.

Know your options

Meet the products.

Philips

Philips Zoom

Professional whitening with in-office and take-home options.

How it works

Peroxide gel performs the bleaching. WhiteSpeed is an in-office system; DayWhite uses hydrogen peroxide and NiteWhite uses carbamide peroxide in home formulations.

Why it matters

The family offers different treatment formats for office care or a prescribed home routine.

Keep in mind

Strengths and wear times vary. Custom-tray fit and the exact gel determine instructions. Do not transfer an overnight regimen to a daytime formulation.

GLO Science

GLO professional and home systems

Whitening options combining a compatible mouthpiece system with peroxide gel.

How it works

GLO systems use controlled warming and, in applicable models, light with the whitening formulation.

Why it matters

A guided device routine may be convenient for patients who prefer a timed mouthpiece format.

Keep in mind

Professional and home gels differ. Use only the approved gel, mouthpiece, and controller combination for the kit. A device does not guarantee a pain-free result.

Ultradent / Opalescence

Opalescence Go

At-home whitening in prefilled trays.

How it works

The tray holds a hydrogen-peroxide gel against natural teeth.

Why it matters

Ready-filled trays reduce the need to measure gel or obtain a custom tray.

Keep in mind

The manufacturer offers different strengths with different wear times. Follow your package; do not sleep in these trays or use another product’s schedule.

Philips

Philips Sonicare whitening kits

Take-home whitening using compatible trays and gel.

How it works

Selected kits use moldable, semi-custom trays with a specified Philips whitening formulation.

Why it matters

The tray format provides a home option with a defined fit and application routine.

Keep in mind

Kit contents vary. Confirm how to shape the tray, which gel belongs with it, and whether refills or other components are included before starting.

Put it into practice

What use and care involve.

  1. Check your starting point

Discuss existing dental work, tooth and gum health, sensitivity, and the result you hope to see. Record the starting shade when appropriate.

  2. Choose the format

Compare office treatment, custom or semi-custom trays, a device kit, and prefilled trays. Ask what is included and what future supplies might be needed.

  3. Use the written plan

Follow the exact amount, placement, session time, storage, and cleaning instructions. Do not share prescription gel or combine multiple whitening regimens.

  4. Review and maintain

Let us know about discomfort or uneven expectations. Continue daily oral care and ask when, or whether, touch-ups are appropriate rather than whitening continuously.

Understand the essentials

Let’s take a closer look.

What whitening can—and cannot—change

Peroxide-based whitening changes colored compounds in natural teeth. Crowns, veneers, and tooth-colored fillings do not lighten in the same way, so the color match may change. Surface stain removal during cleaning is different from bleaching the underlying tooth color.

Compare the experience, not just the percentage

An in-office visit offers professional application and tissue protection. Home options spread treatment into your routine. Tray fit, gel chemistry, sensitivity history, and the time you can commit all matter. Hydrogen peroxide and carbamide peroxide percentages cannot be compared as if they were the same ingredient.

Keep comfort part of the plan

Temporary sensitivity or gum irritation can occur with whitening. Follow the prescribed amount and time; stop and contact us if discomfort is significant or persists. We can discuss adjustments or a suitable sensitivity product. Do not keep increasing the dose to chase a particular shade.

In-office

Philips Zoom and GLO professional systems use peroxide gel within a clinician-directed procedure. Your team selects the formulation, protects soft tissue, and monitors the treatment. Professional gel is not for self-application at home.

Guided home care

Custom-tray Zoom DayWhite or NiteWhite, GLO home systems, and Philips Sonicare tray kits offer different ways to fit treatment into your day. A home plan still needs the correct product, fit, and directions.

Prefilled trays

Opalescence Go supplies gel in ready-to-use trays. Convenience does not make strengths or schedules interchangeable. Check the package and the instructions given for your teeth.

A few common questions

Good questions. Clear answers.

How many shades will my teeth change?

There is no guaranteed number for your smile. The starting color, type of discoloration, and treatment affect the result. Marketing shade claims should not substitute for an individual discussion.

Should I whiten before replacing a visible filling or crown?

Tell us about both goals before treatment starts. Because restorations do not whiten like teeth, the sequence and timing of shade selection may affect the final match.

Can a take-home mouthpiece work by itself?

Only use it as its system directs. Some kits require a compatible controller, gel, or other components. A mouthpiece supplied after an office visit is not necessarily a complete home system.

Make it personal

Ask your
dental team.

Bring these questions to your next visit.

  • Which format fits my sensitivity history, schedule, and existing dental work?
  • What does this kit include, and what should I do if I develop discomfort?

Pause and reflect

A quick check-in.

One question to help the idea stick. There’s no score, and you can try again.

Why should you avoid using another kit’s wear time?
