How professional whitening works

What Is Professional Whitening?

Whitening gels use peroxide to lighten stains in natural teeth. Professional guidance begins with checking the cause of discoloration, reviewing your dental work, and choosing a suitable approach. At Highland Dental, we'll talk through your goals and sensitivity history before recommending a format.

Choose a format that fits

Your Options
  • In-office treatment — your dental team protects the soft tissues, applies the selected gel, and supervises the session. The appointment length and number of cycles depend on the system.
  • A home system — custom trays or a compatible mouthpiece let you follow a dentist-directed plan at home. Check which trays, gel, and device components your kit requires.
  • Prefilled trays — options such as Opalescence Go come with gel already in the tray and do not require custom impressions. Use the wear time supplied with your exact formulation.

Our whitening guide explains Philips Zoom, GLO, and Opalescence Go, including the differences between office and home formats. Ask us which options are available and suitable for you.

What to expect

The Whitening Process
1

Health and Goals

We review your teeth, gums, existing dental work, and sensitivity history. Bring any whitening products you've already tried.

2

Starting Shade

We record your starting shade and talk about what a meaningful change would look like for you.

3

Your Instructions

You'll know which gel and tray or device to use, how much to apply, and when to stop. Instructions stay with the exact kit.

4

Review and Touch-Ups

We review comfort and results, then discuss whether and when a touch-up makes sense. More frequent use is not automatically better.

Will whitening hurt my teeth?

Sensitivity

Temporary tooth sensitivity and gum irritation can occur. Tell us about existing sensitivity before starting. If whitening causes discomfort, pause and contact us; we can review the product, fit, and schedule rather than asking you to push through it. Ongoing or severe pain needs an evaluation.

Aftercare tips

Keeping It Bright

Keep the instructions that came with your treatment. Follow the recommended eating, drinking, cleaning, and storage directions for that system. Don't borrow another kit's gel strength or wear time, mix products, or add extra sessions to chase a faster result.

Before buying refills, check that the gel matches your tray or device and that any required controller or mouthpiece is included. Our product guide walks through those differences so there are fewer surprises when you get home.

Common questions about whitening

How white will my teeth get?
No single shade change fits everyone. We'll discuss your starting color, stain type, and existing restorations before you choose a treatment.
How long do results last?
Results vary with the original discoloration, the treatment, and your habits. Bring up touch-ups at your visit so we can check your teeth and review an appropriate schedule.
Can I use the same directions for every whitening kit?
No. A custom tray, prefilled tray, and device-based system may use different gels and wear times. Keep each product with its instructions, and ask us before changing or combining them.
Is whitening covered by insurance?
Whitening is generally considered cosmetic and is usually not covered. We’ll explain the fee and available options before treatment.
