IV Conscious Sedation

IV conscious sedation can help selected patients relax during treatment. A health review, appropriate monitoring, and clear recovery instructions are part of planning your care.

Understanding the basics

What Is IV Conscious Sedation?

IV conscious sedation delivers medication through a small IV. It can take effect quickly, and the dose can be adjusted during treatment. The aim is to help you relax while remaining responsive and breathing independently. We monitor your response throughout. Your memory of the visit may be reduced, but this varies.

What to expect

The Process
1

Screening and Instructions

We review your health and medications and provide instructions about eating, drinking, and preparation. Arrange an escort and any required supervision before your appointment.

2

A Small IV, Then Calm

We place a small IV. If you are anxious about needles, let us know; numbing cream may help make placement more comfortable.

3

Comfortable Treatment

We adjust the medication as needed and monitor your response, including heart rate, oxygen level, and blood pressure. Local anesthetic numbs the treatment area.

4

Finish Comfortably

We monitor your recovery before discharge. A responsible adult takes you home and stays with you as instructed. Follow your written activity restrictions even if you feel alert.

Training and Safety

Dr. Le trained in IV sedation during his year of focused surgical training. Before treatment, we review your health and explain the planned monitoring, potential side effects, and risks, including breathing problems or a deeper response than intended. Ask us who will administer your sedation, who will monitor you, and what to expect during recovery.

Common questions about IV sedation

Is IV sedation the same as general anesthesia?
No. With conscious sedation, the aim is to keep you responsive and breathing independently while helping you relax. We monitor you throughout treatment. We do not provide general anesthesia and will discuss referral when a different level of care is needed.
Will I remember the procedure?
You may remember some or much of the visit, or relatively little. A lack of memory is not guaranteed. Local anesthetic is used separately to numb the treatment area.
What do I need to do beforehand?
Follow your written eating, drinking, and medication instructions. Arrange a responsible adult to accompany you and remain with you for the period specified. Follow the restrictions on driving, work, alcohol, and important decisions.
Is it covered by insurance?
Coverage varies — some plans contribute when sedation accompanies surgical procedures. We'll verify your benefits and quote everything before your visit.
